Ugly Uniform of the Day

Last Saturday, the Missouri Tigers broke out these threads in their annual rivalry game against Kansas. The Tigers came out on the short end of a 40-37 loss played in the sleet in Kansas City.

The game was great, but the uniforms are as ugly as the weather they played in. It looks like something my high school wore in the 80's, only Mizzou's has some white trim on it. The only thing worse was when Missouri last broke out gold uniforms, in a 1984 home date with Notre Dame. That day, the Tigers wore gold pants with the gold jerseys. Interestingly enough, they lost that day, too. Maybe the Tigers won't wear these again any time soon.

These uniforms are really bad. We won't be subject to them Saturday night in the Big 12 championship game, since the North team wears white when the championship game is played in the North. These jerseys look like puke.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

Wednesday night, ESPN2 showed a great game between Ball State and Central Michigan. Ball State stayed undefeated with a win over the two-time defending MAC champions.

The Chippewas broke out these never-worn uniforms for this special game on national television. The jerseys are described as "Vegas Gold". My question is: which part of Vegas? This jersey looks like it is straight from one of the not-so-nice casinos in Vegas.

To add insult to injury, or vice versa, Central Michigan lost the game. They sure didn't get any Vegas luck with the Vegas jerseys.

Maroon is a good color for them. They need to stick with it.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

Normally, I find the WNBA not worthy of comment. I think I heard that Detroit (coached by the great Bill Laimbeer) won the title over the weekend. However, I saw some really gross uniforms on SportsCenter the other night.




The Los Angeles Sparks were wearing these purple things with designs all over them. If they wore long pants, they would have looked like pajamas. These are U-G-L-Y! In researching these things, I found that they wear a similar gold uniform at home. Gross!

These uniforms are putrid. Yet another reason not to watch the WNBA.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

I am a fan of the throwback jersey. Most of the time. I make exceptions for that from time to time, though.

Before their run of four Super Bowl wins in the 1970's that put them on the map, the Pittsburgh Steelers were the most hapless franchise in the NFL. You would think the Steelers would want to forget about those days. But, no.. The Steelers have chosen to wear this ugly ensemble as a throwback uniform. This is what the Steelers wore in the 1960's when they royally stunk up the field.

The gold helmets and white pants do not go with the black jerseys. My high school wore black and gold, and they never tried to wear a gold helmet with white pants and a black jersey. But, the Steelers are in the NFL. They should know better.

This comes from the same city that gave us the Pirates' mix and match uniforms in the 1970's. Go figure.

Yuck.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

The New York Jets today wore throwback uniforms formerly worn by the New York Titans. The NY Titans was the original name of the Jets franchise when they came into the American Football League in 1960.

In 1964, Leon Hess, owner of the Hess oil corporation, was a partner that bought into the team. The team moved to Shea Stadium, took the name of Jets, and changed the team colors to green and white to match the colors of Hess gas stations.

The Jets need to stick with the green and white uniforms. These Titans uniforms are putrid. Brett Favre threw six touchdown passes today. Even that performance can't outdo the stink that these uniforms laid out onto the Meadowlands turf today.

Leave these New York Titans uniforms at Shea Stadium. Never mind that Shea is getting blown up. The unis can be blown up with it.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

The Gator Nation is a proud group of people. Their football program has won two national championships in recent years, and their men's basketball team has won the last two national championships. I saw highlights today of their game against Kentucky, and cringed on behalf of Gator fans everywhere.

I didn't even notice the blue stripes on these black uniforms. All I saw at a raw glance on TV was the black uniforms with orange numbers and no trim. I thought the Baltimore Orioles had adopted a college basketball team.

The Gators don't need to stoop to having black uniforms. At least their football team isn't going to try something like this.

Ugh. Orange would be an improvement over these things.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

No one can accuse this blog of not taking advantage of equal opportunity or gender equity.

Last night, I was changing channels, and came across the SEC women's basketball tournament. Auburn was playing Vanderbilt, and the Tigers were wearing these navy blue uniforms with wild stripes on them. The uniforms made them look more like tigers than a basketball team. That's too bad. It's ok for their mascot to look like a tiger, but not their athletes. Auburn needs to tone down the stripes.


As I searched for a picture, I came across the same uniform in orange. As you can guess: Gross!

These tiger stripes look better on their mascot. Better yet, they look better on Tony the Tiger or on the Exxon Tiger. They don't belong on the uniform.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

The Oregon athletic department, thanks to their benefactors at Nike, leads the nation in ugly uniform combinations. They should leave well enough alone with their green and gold, but they can't seem to do that.

On Saturday at UCLA, the Ducks wore these things with black sparkles on them. The numbers show up in gold. The name "Oregon" and the player's name is in a black sparkly font on a black uniform. It's not Back In Black, but Black On Black.

Are they so ashamed of Oregon that they don't want us to see the name across the front of the jersey?

UUOTD returns!

Last Thursday night, the Marquette Golden Eagles (they're no longer the Warriors) broke out these baby blue uniforms in a nationally televised loss to Louisville. They are similar to what Marquette wore in the 1970's when Al McGuire had them on top of the college basketball world. This design is making a comeback.

Needless to say, they're ugly as sin. They look like pajamas my kids would wear to bed.

Disgusting. Blech.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

I have been accused of playing favorites with ugly uniforms. Yes, I have been known to throw schools and teams under the bus that I don't like. However, today, I am forced to attack a school and program that I love.

The University of Oklahoma men's basketball team came out in these gray uniforms on Wednesday night against the University of Tulsa. This is a fashion no-no. The Sooners' colors are crimson and cream. They wear white in place of cream. Gray is not their color. The Sooners looked like Ohio State. Now I wish they could recruit like Ohio State, as the Buckeyes rode two NBA lottery picks to the national championship game last year. However, gray is a no-no. Gray is the color of the Confederate army and Ohio State. It is not the color of the Sooners.

Sooners, stick to crimson and cream. Please. For all of us.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

A uniform has to be pretty bad to earn repeat status as UUOTD. Oregon State did just that.

Last Saturday night, OSU-West wore these ugly pieces of thread on national television. These were unveiled earlier in the year at a press conference, when they earned their first mention as UUOTD. These uniforms make these poor guys look like they're wearing bras out on the field. This is not what these young men signed up for when they accepted scholarships to Oregon State. Yuck.

Nike makes good shoes. They need to stick to shoes and to get out of the uniform business.

The Ugly Uniform Bowl, aka the Civil War, is December 1. This is when the Beavers visit Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks. Here's hoping the OSU team plays better than they look on that day.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

Today's UUOTD was unveiled Monday night for the second time this season. The Pittsburgh Steelers broke out their 60's throwbacks for a celebration of their 75th anniversary. These do not match. The mustard-colored helmets do not go with the white pants. The Steelers did well to do away with these uniforms in time for the dynasty of the 70's. The team was as bad as the uniforms when they wore them regularly.

Speaking of their dynasty: If the franchise is celebrating their past, why didn't they just wear their 70's uniforms? They're not that different from what they wear today, except for the fonts of the names and numbers.

The Steelers need to get back to their modern uniforms quickly.

Today's UUOTD is found in Kingston, Rhode Island. This uniform is worn by the Rhode Island Rams.

How many shades of blue can you mix with white for a uniform? And, what's with the baby blue ram's horns?

This thing is U-G-L-Y.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

The West Virginia Mountaineers have been doing some funky things with their uniforms this season. They have mixed and matched all forms of white, blue, and gold.

This combination they wore last week against Mississippi State is putrid. They need to keep the gold jerseys in the closet. They look better in blue at home and white on the road. The font used for the numbers looks like something out of Star Trek.

Nike has opened up a big can of worms with this style.

Saturday night, the Minnesota Golden Gophers hosted the Buckeyes of The Ohio State University. I don't know what the Gophers were thinking. Was this a motivational tool? Were they trying to honor someone? Did they want to gross the Buckeyes out? Whatever the intent, the Gophers wore these awful mustard yellow uniforms on national television. Gross.

It's hard to do a whole lot with maroon and gold. However, mustard yellow jerseys and pants with red helmets do not work at all. These are ugly.

I hope and pray Minnesota and Syracuse never meet in a bowl game. All-yellow vs. all-orange would be beyond awful.

This definitely makes me want to gouge both eyes.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

Today's edition of UUOTD takes us to sunny south Florida.

The University of Miami, also known as The U, has been creative in their combination of their colors of orange and green. They were also one of the first schools to use creative stripes and trim on their uniforms.

This year, Miami has added a green line which comes extends all the way to the back of the jersey, up onto the back of the jersey where the name would normally be. It looks like someone took a picture of their orange jersey and used Microsoft Paint to draw a green line on the jersey. The green stripe looks like two snakes are meeting on the back of the jersey.

This is a bad use of green and orange. Yuck!

Ugly Uniform of the Day

This was suggested by a friend of my wife. I warned of this occasion earlier in the year. As warned and promised, this becomes the first two-time offender in the history of this column.

Today, the Philadelphia Eagles wore the ugliest uniform in the history of modern professional football. They were attempting to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the franchise. That thought is well-taken. However, they redefined the word U-G-L-Y with these things. These are gross, disgusting, and putrid.

Unfortunately for us, the Eagles may be tempted to wear these again, as they pummeled the Detroit Lions, 56-21, in these things.

If they're going to wear old uniforms, why don't they wear something like this?

Ugly Uniform Of The Day

A new football season brings a new round of ridiculous uniforms. It would be really hard to top what I saw last night.

Syracuse got thumped by Washington, 42-12. Even worse than the score were the uniforms they wore. This blog ripped on the Orange for last year's uniforms. This year, some good changes were made, but the combination screams UGLY!!

Helmets: The blue "S" looks fine. It gives a somewhat modern look to the uniform.

Jerseys: It is good for a team called the Orange to wear orange jerseys. I had a hard time with the Orange wearing blue at home.

Pants: Orange pants are fine to wear on the road with white jerseys. At home, the combination of orange helmets, orange jerseys, and orange pants are hideous. White pants would improve this uniform greatly.

If the stripes were horizontal, these would have been mistaken for prison uniforms. As it is, they looked like pumpkins out on the field.

It was a bad night in Syracuse, unless you're a Washington Husky. They're counting the days until basketball season.

Ugly Uniform of the Day

I apologize for the time between posts. It's been a crazy week.

I saw a picture of this uniform in the preview for Kent State in Phil Steele's College Football Preview. This is an alternate uniform, or perhaps something they wore two years ago, as they are wearing blue at home and white on the road on most occasions.

Those yellow-gold jerseys do not go with the blue helmets and blue pants. I can do without the lightning bolts on the pants, but that's not as bad as the gold jersey. Cal does the same thing, and it is not good. The gold jersey is ugly, especially this shade of gold with the blue helmet. The Golden Flashes were better off by going back to the blue home and white road uniforms.

Kent State is better off leaving these things in the closet. They should keep the blue and white jerseys.

UUOTD-Turning Back The Clock A Little More

In 1994 and 1995, the Iowa Hawkeyes wore these jerseys with horizontal stripes on the shoulders. I don't know that they were trying to prove. I guess they thought the stripes looked like wings. They also had the Tiger Hawk logo on the front of the jersey, with the word "Hawkeyes". This uniform was repulsive. Though these uniforms are long gone, they are still worthy of mention. Yuck. Tim Dwight is shown above in the road version of the jersey. The home black version was even worse.

When Kirk Ferentz took the head coaching job in 1999, the Hawkeyes reverted back to their simple black, gold, and white uniforms they wore in the 80's and early 90's. It was a smart move.

Goofy stuff on the shoulder pads should not be tolerated.
