The struggling Iona Gaels continue to have hard luck. The Gaels lost to Burnt Siena last night, as Kenny Hasbrouck hit a shot at the buzzer to give Siena a 61-60 win.

Iona has lost five of their last seven games by one point or in overtime.

That's rotten luck. That's just plain snakebitten.

By the way, I always wanted to call that school Burnt Siena, though their colors are green.

don't feel too bad, last year they made NCAA tourney and won their conference.
all their good players were seniors.
that's the cycle in small schools

That's exactly right. It's hard to have more than two good years in a row at a mid-major program. Plus, even if you're really good, you can have one bad game in your conference tournament, and have your season totally ruined.

At the same time, a mediocre or injury-plagued team can get on a run at the end of the season and win one of these smaller conference tournaments, and go to the Big Dance. There is a lot easier chance of that than there is for a bottom-dweller to win the conference tournament somewhere like the ACC.

I can't believe you called it the Big Dance.

It is the Big Dance. It's a ball, and the small programs are Cinderella. Cinderella is what makes the Tournament great.
